Natsume Rat is a mannequin used as an alternative to animal experimentation. It consists of a silicone rat designed for medical, pharmaceutical, and veterinary training.
Natsume Rat, a rat model for training in experimental animal techniques, is offered within the framework of the three "Rs" (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) by Russell and Burch in 1959.
Natsume Rat helps reduce the number of laboratory animals used by being employed as an alternative to animal experiments in medical, pharmaceutical, and veterinary education, as well as in teaching sophisticated animal experimentation techniques.

With this model, users can practice blood sampling and injection techniques and perform oral administration. They can also train to safely place a feeding tube into the animal's stomach (for oral administration), and learn to properly restrain and handle an animal.
The techniques can be repeated again and again until users master them perfectly.
The Natsume Rat is anatomically accurate with a pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, esophagus, and stomach. Additionally, it has a caudal vein that can be filled with artificial blood to practice blood sampling and injection techniques. Its abdomen is partially transparent so users can evaluate their gavage techniques. The tail supports many injections and can be replaced. It can also be used on the "Koken Rat", an old rat simulator.
The Natsume Rat was developed to replace the "Koken Rat" simulator. It is made of silicone with a realistic touch.
